Axe Head Cicada's awake with their piercing drones as the sun begins to rise over the river bed. Along with them sing and scream the birds of the gallery forest and surrounding thornveld savannah, Ibis's, Wood Hoopoe's, Cuckoo's, Boubou's, Guineafowl and many others.
As the cicada's fade and the morning calms, Hoopoe's and Kingfishers fill their distinctive calls throughout the sandy bed, along with a variety of South African songs.
Recorded in a dry section of the Limpopo river, located in Mmabolela Reserve, South Africa, during the 'Sonic Mmabolela' residency, co-organized by Francisco Lopez & James Webb. Many thanks to all those involved with the residency, including all the wonderful and kind staff, and to the people who lent me money which made my involvement possible: Mum, Dad, Oma and Rachael.
